Trip Report:
Out and Back Overnighter Shakedown Hike: I was looking to do a short, overnight trip to a campsite I had never been to.  After making a few gear mods and gathering the supplies, I started the bike across town on a hot afternoon.  The BOB trailer was loaded with hiking shoes and poles and at least a few liters of water.  There’s always a good climb up the hill to 4th St, and I took that until winding my way up to Woodland Ave.  It’s not too far then to Jean Duluth Rd, which brought me most of the way there.  Once I made it to the trailhead, I locked up to a sign and grabbed my pack.  Off I went on foot and into the woods. Soon I realized I would need to pick up the pace or hike in the dark.  I made it to the campsite just before dark, and I quickly set up my tarp and hammock with ample pitching options.  I rehydrated a big batch of sweet potato soup and heated it on my small woodstove.  After an amazing night of sleep, breakfast, and even some bacon from my new camp friends, I started hiking back to the bike.  It was hot, and I was feeling the stress in my feet.  I passed a few thru hikers, and we chatted through our bug nets as we got swarmed by flies.  Once I got back to the bike I could only think of one thing: Chocolate Malt.  I thought it would be a slow descent back into town, but I took a different route and ended up turning onto Strand Rd from Tischer.  I was met with a massive hill to climb and descend before running into Jean Duluth Rd again.  I was standing on the pedals in my granny gear and just kept cranking out of fear.  Finally, I made it to the familiar route I had started on.  I rode the hill down through East Duluth and to the Portland Malt Shoppe where I met my brother.  It was busy, but so worth it after a long weekend.  From there, I strolled down the Lakewalk and finished on the bike path in Lincoln Park.  Total miles on the bike was just below 40mi, and total miles hiked was about 15.
